Why girls-only football
It isn't instead of mixed football. It's another way to play, and it's one many girls and parents say they want.
-
Room to have a go
In an all-female team, girls are more comfortable being themselves. They're more confident, more willing to try new things, and more willing to make a mistake and try again.

What most girls prefer
56% of girls aged 13 to 24 prefer to play sport with girls only, and 69% of those who don't see themselves as sporty. Parents back it: 71% of parents say girls-only options in team sports are important.

-
Better with friends
Nearly half of teenage girls who've fallen out of love with sport say they'd take part if their friends did. So bring a mate: teams can be formed with friends.

Still a proper comp
64% of girls aged 11 to 18 enjoy competitive sport. The older age groups finish the season with a championship series.

“If we had more opportunities to play with the girls, then I'd be more interested in playing.”
About the age groups
Who can register
New players to football and existing ODFA players are both invited to register.
These age groups may be adjusted depending on the nominations received. Not sure where you or your daughter fits? Ask the ODFA.
If your age group doesn't run
Last season there weren't the numbers to run an Under 8 to 9s comp. The older girls played in the 10s to 13s, and younger girls who weren't comfortable playing against older girls were given skills training and standalone small games.
If the ODFA can't provide the comp you're hoping to play in, a refund will be provided.
Why the teams are small
Small teams on smaller fields mean more of the ball for everyone. In Danish studies, under-10s were involved in the play about 75% more often in 5v5 than in 8v8, and girls aged 9 and 10 made more plays on the ball, and more successful ones, in 7v7 than in 8v8.

Referees and team leaders
Referees
Referees will again be used for the older age groups. For the younger age groups, referees will be used when available, as referee and instructional team leaders, if we can get young referees wanting to take on the role.
Team Leaders
Team Leaders are required in the junior and youth age groups, to get the team organised and to referee the game if our referees aren't available.
Every team still needs a Team Leader who may need to step in and referee if a referee can't be provided. We hope this can be avoided most weeks, but it does happen.
